A licence badge in the casino footer: how to verify it is real

A badge is an image, and an image proves nothing by itself. Take the company name, number and domain it points to and find the same line on the Gambling Regulatory Authority's list of licensed gaming companies. If the line does not match, treat the badge as an unconfirmed claim.

The short answer

A badge in a casino footer is a picture put there by the site's owner. It can be copied, edited or borrowed, so on its own it confirms nothing.

The law asks for more than a picture. Section 36(3) of the Gambling Control Act, 2025 says a holder of an online gambling licence shall display the licence issued under the Act in its online platform. The full matching method is in the guide to how to check an online casino licence in Kenya; this page deals with the badge itself.

Why a picture is weak evidence

A file saved from one site can be placed on another in seconds, and the viewer has no way to tell the original from the copy. A badge also has no date, so it cannot show that a licence is still valid today.

Text is different. A company name, a licence number and a domain can be compared word for word with the regulator's list, which is why the checks below use the text and not the image.

What a badge can and cannot show

Treat the badge as a pointer. It may name a regulator, show a number, or link somewhere. Each of those is a claim you can test, and none of them is a test result.

What the badge showsWhat it may meanHow to test it
Only a logo or sealA decoration with no checkable detailLook for a company name and number elsewhere on the page or in the terms.
A numberA claimed licence numberFind the same number in the PG column of the GRA list.
A company nameThe claimed licenseeMatch it to the Operators Name or Trading Name column.
A foreign regulator's nameA licence from another countryIt does not answer the Kenyan question. Look for a GRA licence.
A linkA page chosen by the siteDo not treat the linked page as the register. Use gra.go.ke/licensed-operators/ directly.

Steps to verify a badge

Do the steps in order and write down what you see. Each one narrows the claim.

  1. Note the details. Copy the company name, trading name, number and the domain in your browser's address bar.
  2. Open the regulator's page yourself. Type the address of the list into your browser instead of following the badge. The list is described in how to read the GRA list of licensed operators.
  3. Match one line. The company, trading name, PG number and domain should sit on a single line.
  4. Check the kind of licence. A casino needs a public gaming number. A number under BK alone is a bookmaker licence, and the difference is set out in the PG and BK licence comparison.
  5. Ask if anything is off. If a step fails, ask the Authority before you rely on the site.

This site keeps a filtered copy of the list, shown in the table of casino brands on the GRA list. Use it to find a line quickly and then confirm on the regulator's own page.

Illustrative example of a mismatch

Illustrative example: a footer shows a green seal and the words "Sample Gaming Limited, licence 0000456". The company, brand and number are invented and belong to no real operator. The table sets the claim against what a search of the list might show.

ItemFooter claimFound on the listReading
CompanySample Gaming LimitedSample Gaming LimitedAgrees
Number0000456PG 0000123Does not agree
DomainThe address in the browser barA different domainDoes not agree

One match out of three is not a confirmation. The company name may be real while the site is not run by that company, which is why the number and domain carry the weight.

Why the date of the list matters

The register on the regulator's site describes the 2025/26 trading period and the page was last modified on 2026-03-19. A licence granted afterwards may not appear on it, and a licence that has since lapsed or been suspended may still be listed.

Section 39 of the Act requires the Authority's register to record the date of expiry and any revocation or suspension. Section 39(2) opens that register to the public at reasonable times and upon payment of the prescribed fee. The Authority's toll-free number is 0800-723-770; quote the number, company name and domain when you ask.

What to do when the badge fails the check

A failed match is a finding, and the next step depends on what failed.

The route for reporting a problem is in how to complain about an online casino. What the law says about operating without a licence is in the penalty for an unlicensed online casino.

What a verified badge does not tell you

A matched line says the regulator recorded that licence for that company in the period of the list. It says nothing about how quickly the company pays, and this site makes no claim about any operator.

It also changes nothing about the games. Every casino game carries a house edge, so the expected result of long play is a loss. Gambling is addictive: play responsibly and only if you are 18 or older. Helpline and self-exclusion details are on the responsible gambling page.

Questions and answers

Does a badge in the footer mean a casino is licensed in Kenya?

No. A badge is only a claim made by the site. The Gambling Control Act, 2025 requires an online licence holder to display the licence on its platform, but whether a licence exists is shown by the Authority's register and list, not by a picture.

Is the badge the same as the licence?

Not on the wording of the law. Section 36(3) of the Act says a holder of an online gambling licence shall display the licence issued under the Act in its online platform. A small logo is not the licence issued under the Act.

What if the badge names a foreign regulator?

Then it says nothing about a Kenyan licence. Section 79(3) of the Act makes it an offence for a foreign based operator to provide online gambling services in Kenya without a licence, so a foreign badge does not replace a GRA licence.

What if the casino is on the GRA list but the badge number is different?

Treat the badge as unconfirmed. The number on the page and the number on the list should be identical, with the company and domain on the same line. A mismatch is a reason to ask the Authority before relying on the site.

Can I see the licence expiry date on the GRA list?

The published list has no expiry column. Section 39(1)(d) of the Act requires the Authority's register to record the date of expiry, and section 39(2) opens that register to the public upon payment of the prescribed fee.

Does an advertisement have to carry the licence number too?

An approved gambling advertisement must indicate the licence number of the licensee, under regulation 8(c)(i) of the Advertising Regulations, 2026. A number in an advertisement is a claim to check in the same way as a badge.
